FAQs
What’s the difference between bricks and blocks?
Bricks are often made from clay whilst concrete blocks are made from a cement and aggregate mixture. Bricks are versatile and can be used in many construction projects for walls, facades and landscaping projects. Concrete blocks have higher compressive strength than bricks and are used in load-bearing walls and foundational structures.
Which is better, bricks or blocks?
Concrete blocks would be a better material for load-bearing walls and foundation construction, with a higher compressive strength and better resistance to fire and water. Bricks are more suited to structural walls, chimneys and fireplaces, with a low-maintenance and traditional aesthetic.
Are bricks and blocks fireproof?
Many bricks and blocks have a certain level of fire resistance. Bricks, often made from clay, are usually made in a fire kiln and so are highly resistant to fire, but one individual brick is more fire-resistant than a brick wall, due to the mortar that holds it all together. Concrete blocks are also fire-resistant and classed as non-combustible material.
How many bricks equals a block?
How many bricks you’ll need to equal one block entirely depends on the sizes of your bricks and blocks. In the UK, the size of a standard house brick is 215 x 102.5 x 65mm, and the size of a standard concrete block is 400 x 100 x 215mm. With these measurements, one concrete block would have the same length as around two bricks and the same height of three bricks with 10mm mortar joints.
