More information about Concrete Lintels

What are concrete lintels?

Ensure you've got optimal load-bearing support on your next construction project with our selection of prestressed concrete lintels from Supreme. Concrete lintels are horizontal support beams used above door and window openings, external doors and internal partitions or in load-bearing walls and are typically manufactured from reinforced concrete. They’re an especially important part of the structure of commercial, industrial and residential buildings, providing vital load-bearing support between masonry work.

Door lintels and window lintels are placed across the top of the opening, helping to distribute the weight of the structure above evenly across the surrounding walls and making sure the opening is secure and will not collapse.

What are the benefits of using concrete lintels?

Our prestressed concrete lintels, also called precast concrete lintels, are built to ensure high-performance in any construction job. They are incredibly durable and hard-wearing and are a great cost-effective option too. Each heavy-duty concrete lintel in our range offers both excellent fire-resistance and insulation properties, reducing thermal bridging and giving you peace of mind that the product is up to standard.

The prestressing process places a high compression load on the beams before they’re used, allowing for improved performance under load once you put our concrete lintels into action. Alongside their main function of providing load-bearing support, reinforced concrete lintels also offer a potential decorative benefit too with a choice of finishes.

What types of concrete lintels do we have available?

We supply a range of heavy-duty concrete lintels as part of our wider lintels and building materials section. We stock a variety of sizes with a range of widths from 100mm-215mm and lengths from 600mm-3000mm.

The concrete lintels in our collection have a textured surface and can accept a range of finishes without the need for special preparation. With something for every project, we’re sure you’ll find what you need at Selco to complete your construction projects to the highest standard.

FAQs

What are concrete lintels used for?

Concrete lintels are load-bearing support beams placed above an opening in a wall, such as for doors, windows and partitions to provide structural support for the wall above the opening. Concrete lintels are usually made from reinforced concrete.

What size concrete lintel do I need?

The size of your concrete lintel will of course depend on the size of the opening it’s going above. Generally, there needs to be a minimum 150mm bearing on each side of the opening. So, the overall length of your lintel should be at least 300mm longer than the opening.

How much weight can a concrete lintel support?

The amount of weight a concrete lintel can support will depend on the length of the lintel, the type of wall it’s supporting as well as the lintel’s load ratio. Make sure to check the specifications of the lintel you’re buying to find out its load capacity.

How do I cut a concrete lintel?

Prestressed concrete lintels can be cut using a high-speed cutting diamond disc designed specifically for masonry. Make sure to use the correct safety equipment such as safety goggles and gloves.

How do I drill into a concrete lintel?

A hammer drill or SDS drill and a masonry drill bit is best for drilling into concrete. Use a smaller drill bit at a lower speed and gradually increase the size and speed to drill your hole. Make sure to use the correct safety equipment when drilling into concrete.
