More information about Floor Levelling Compounds

What is floor levelling compound?

Floor levelling compound, also known as self-levelling compound or floor screed, does exactly what the name suggests – it creates a flat, level surface on sub floors before installing flooring such as laminate, tiles, or wooden floorboards. If you install flooring material onto an uneven surface with dips and imperfections, it can cause many issues down the line such as cracking tiles or dents and bumps that show up through thin flooring covers like vinyl. Using a floor leveller can help prevent these problems and ensure a high-quality, long-lasting finish to your flooring project.

Self-levelling floor compound is created from a polymer-modified cement and is usually acrylic or water based. It can include cement, sand, water and other cement additives depending on the type of compound to enhance workability and flexibility, drying time and more. It often comes as a mixture that needs to be mixed with water before applying with a trowel or roller to the floor.

Floor screed is a type of self-levelling compound and is a mix of cement, sharp sand water applied to a concrete subfloor to create a smooth, even base. It can also provide extra thermal or acoustic insulation. Floor levelling screed can be finished with a decorative cover or left as it is if it’s in an area where the finished look isn’t as important, like in a warehouse. It often requires manual application and spreading to get the mixture even, but there is self-levelling screed available on the market.

There are several different types of floor screed and levelling compound available to choose from, including self-levelling latex screed, interior and exterior self-levelling compound and ready mixed self-levelling compound. Whatever the requirements of the projects you’re working on, we’re sure we’ve got what you need to complete the job to a high standard.

We stock all the tools and accessories to help you with the job too, such as trowels, rollers such as our spiked roller, squeegees, mixing paddles, floor levelling pegs and buckets. We also offer concrete fibres, which are fibre additives for concrete and screed to help minimise shrinking and cracking.

How to use self-levelling compound:

Always follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions, but in general the main steps to applying floor levelling compound are:

  • Sweep or vacuum the floor to remove any dust and debris.
  • Repair any holes and cracks in the floor using a filler.
  • You can use a suitable primer underneath the floor smoothing compound to help seal the floor.
  • Mix up the levelling compound according to the package’s instructions.
  • Pour the compound over the floor and spread evenly with a trowel, roller or squeegee, filling all low points. Use a spirit level to check the levelness of the floor.
  • Allow the appropriate drying and curing time – don't walk on the floor or install flooring until it’s completely dry and hardened.
  • Sand/scrape off any excess and apply a second layer of compound if needed.
  • Install your chosen flooring on top.
