Ballast Bags
More information about Ballast Bags
An essential part of many building and construction projects, ballast is often made up of various highly durable materials such as granite, limestone, and other robust stones. We’ve got plenty of ballast bags available for you to order straight to your site, in various types and sizes to suit the job at hand.
What types of ballast do we have available?
We’ve got 10mm and 20mm ballast available in large bags for bigger jobs. Ballast mix generally includes a coarse and angular blend of crushed stone, gravel and sand that is great for creating concrete to be used in various landscaping applications including path edges, shed bases, securing fence posts and much more. They help to easily support and distribute the weight of the structure built on top of it, ensuring the ground beneath doesn’t shift.
Much of our stone and sand ballast can be used as a concrete ballast mix, creating concrete when the ballast stone is added to cement. Ballast for concrete is a popular choice in the construction industry, and we source all our building aggregates from leading suppliers in the area. We also have granite dust, also known as grano dust, which can be mixed in with cement to make fine concrete.
If you’re working on a large-scale project and need greater quantities of ballast, we’ve got jumbo bags available for all our building aggregates. So, if you’re looking for ballast bulk bags or grano dust bulk bags, we’re sure we’ve got what you need at Selco.

FAQs
What is ballast used for?
Ballast is often used in concrete mixes as it’s a strong, durable binding agent when mixed with cement and water. It provides an excellent base for garden sheds, walls and pathways. It can also help with drainage in areas such as railway tracks.
Can you lay slabs on ballast?
Yes – ballast is a good base for paving slabs. You can also mix the ballast with cement to create a concrete mix which is a stable, durable and long-lasting base for patio slabs.
Is ballast the same as sharp sand?
No – ballast and sharp sand aren’t the same thing, although sharp sand is often one of the materials that makes up ballast. Sharp sand is a coarse sand used for making concrete and screed and as a base for paths, block paving and artificial grass. Ballast is used for creating stable bases for houses, railways, roads, shed bases and creating concrete.
Does more ballast make concrete stronger?
Yes – the higher the ratio of ballast to concrete, the stronger the concrete will be. A 1:5 ratio of cement to ballast would be suitable for slabs while a 1:8 ratio would be better for stronger concrete used in foundations. Heavier ballast also creates stronger concrete.
