Looking to install timber decking in an outdoor space?

If you’re working on an outdoor decking project for a customer, you’ll need some high-quality timber decking boards. Providing a more traditional and classic decking look, timber decking is a simple way of transforming the garden and creating a space for seating, relaxing and entertaining.

Using timber for a deck frame

Whether you want to attach decking to your house or keep it freestanding, you can be creative with the design and layout to fit your customer’s needs. Choose from single level plank decking or something more detailed with steps, balustrades and railings.

Using a timber decking base has many benefits including its classic wooden appearance. Our decking boards are strong and durable, and come from sustainable sources with a certified chain of custody. Timber can be cut to size to suit your project’s requirements, helping to create a space that is unique for your customer and their family.

How long does timber decking last?

Whether your decking project is being used for a seating area, BBQing, a hot tub, or even a children’s play area, you’ll want it to be as durable and long-lasting as possible. Our timber deck boards are treated to slow down water absorption and improve the longevity of the decking. Taking good care of your decking and keeping up with its maintenance will make sure the decking lasts for many years to come.

What timber decking do we have available at Selco?

We’ve got grooved deck board, which is made from strong, slow-grown timber and is pressure treated with an additional wax treatment. Our Easi Deck Board is a softwood decking that is also pressure treated to protect it from the elements. Both of the treated timber decking boards that we offer feature a grooved profile that not only helps with grip, but also the drainage of water.

We also have a range of decking rails, spindles and accessories to help you construct your customer’s ideal decking design. Using spindles and balustrades is a great way to add handrails and railings that create a sturdy structure and an elegant look.

FAQs

What timber should you use for decking?

Tanalised timber, or pressure-treated timber, is a great option for your wooden deck boards as it has been treated with preservative chemicals making the wood long-lasting and durable.

What size timber do you need for decking?

The length of a deck board can vary widely, but the most popular lengths are 2.4m, 3m, 3.6m, 4.2m and 4.8m. The thicker the decking board, the stronger and more durable it will be, but it will also be heavier. We have 32mm and 38mm deck boards available in lengths ranging from 2.4-4.8m.

What gap should you leave between decking boards?

Generally, a gap of between 3.5mm (1/8”) and 6.5mm (1/4”) is recommended between decking boards. This will provide a more secure decking surface, leaving space for wood expansion in the warmer months and providing sufficient airflow.

How long does timber decking last?

A well-maintained and durable timber deck can last for 15 years or more. How long your timber deck lasts will depend on various factors, including environmental and weather conditions, the type of wood used, decking treatments, the amount of foot traffic and more.

How to stain timber decking?

You’ll want to make sure you’ve got a couple of days of warm, dry weather. Clean your deck with a decking cleaner to remove any dirt or debris then wait for it to dry. Pour your chosen deck stain into a container, then use a brush or a decking applicator pad to apply it. Make sure to leave as much drying time as possible between coats and after you’ve finished.
