More information about Cavity Trays & Closers

Our selection of cavity trays and wall closers are important components in protecting cavity walls, doors and windows from water ingress, as well as preventing heat loss. They’re often used alongside lintels.

What are cavity trays?

Every building must be designed and constructed to ensure there is no threat to the building, nor the health of its occupants, due to moisture from rainwater penetrating the inner skin of the building. Cavity trays are damp proof courses (DPC) that provide layers of protection by preventing rainwater ingress through the outer wall and into the inner fabric of the building, either being masonry or timber frame constructions. DPC cavity trays are a crucial component in the installation of cavity walls - if rainwater gets through, damp internal walls can cause major problems to the building and to its inhabitants.

There are several places where cavity trays are required – you’d install a cavity tray over a lintel at door and window openings. Other vulnerable areas are at pitched roof or horizontal intersections and abutments where an outer skin becomes an inner skin below extensions or new roof levels, parapet walls, door threshold and reveals, changes of level and perimeter damp requirements. Cavity trays are designed to collect water and discharge it away from the building envelope before any issues arise.

Preformed cavity trays are manufactured to standard shapes and sizes for ease of installation, but there are many types including flexible cavity trays, vertical and horizontal cavity trays, stepped, parapet trays and more. There are many cavity trays with lead flashing supplied with them and certain tray types have water evacuated via high-performance weep ventilators.

We’ve got plenty of Manthorpe cavity trays available for you to browse, including the left- and right-handed pitched roof advantage range, Type E cavity trays which work well as a cavity tray retrofit into existing walls, telescopic ventilators with extension pieces and high-performance Cavibricks for underfloor ventilation, with various weep designs in a range of colours to suit your masonry needs.

What are cavity wall closers?

Cavity wall closers are another key component of cavity wall installation, designed to securely close off the cavity at openings such as doors and windows. You’d also install cavity closers at the top and bottom of a wall. They’re preformed units made from PVC, insulated foam or other damp-proof materials, and help to provide a durable barrier against moisture and air, as well as preventing thermal bridging.

Door and window cavity closers not only prevent water ingress into the inner leaf of cavity walls, but they also ensure the air tightness of a building and prevent draughts. They aid structural support for door and window edges and can aid thermal insulation, too.

As well as standard cavity closers, there are many types available on the market such as insulated, fire-resistant, acoustic and more. Insulated cavity closers feature insulation materials like mineral wool or foam, helping to reduce heat loss and boost the building’s energy efficiency.

We stock two sizes – cavity closers 100mm and cavity closers 150mm. These Multicor insulated cavity closers are made from high-quality uPVC with a flexible weather seal and are suitable for use at construction stage or retrofitting.
