More information about Staircases
What kinds of staircases and ready-made stairs do we have available?
If you’ve got more than one floor in the building you’re working on, you’re going to need a high-quality flight of stairs to help provide access to each level. An important architectural component of any home or building, a staircase can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, and at Selco we’ve got a great range of wooden staircases for you to browse through, in various styles and sizes.
Whether your customer is looking for their timber staircase to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the space, or something to make a statement in the room, we’re sure there’s something for every project. A set of stairs can come in various designs depending on the space and the desired flow of movement for people moving within the home. Museums and galleries might opt for large, grand staircases whilst modern homes might require cosy, space-saving and simplistic stairs. You can choose from straight, U-shaped, L-shaped, curved, spiral staircases and much more.
At Selco, we’ve got a variety of standard staircases to browse from top brands such as Kwikstairs and Stairbox. Our selection includes flat pack stairs and ready-made staircases so you can quickly and easily construct a set of stairs on-site for your customer. The straight staircase from Kwikstairs is flat-packed and ready to install, featuring everything needed for assembly in the pack. Or there’s a straight MDF staircase from Stairbox that is made from sustainably sourced timber and is provided unfinished; ready to be personalised to your customer’s taste.
We also stock kite winder stairs boxes, which are designed to change the direction of a set of stairs. Our Kwikstairs Winder Boxes can be used with Kwikstairs Straight Flight kits and are available both left- and right-handed.
Your wooden stairs might also need additional parts, including stair treads, risers, a staircase stringer, spindles, newel posts, handrails and much more. Fortunately, at Selco we stock everything needed for you to complete your job to the highest standards. If you’re looking for bullnose stairs, we even stock a kit to create a bullnose stair step that can be fitted to any staircase for the perfect finishing touch.

FAQs
How much does a new staircase cost?
The average cost for a new staircase installation in the UK is anything between £1000-£5000, but this entirely depends on your customer’s budget, requirements and preferences.
What are the different parts of a staircase called?
The stair tread is the horizontal part that you stand on, and stair nosing is the part of the tread that hangs over the riser. The stair riser is the vertical panel between the steps and stair stringers are the vertical boards that run along each side of the staircase. The staircase’s balustrade will be made from stair spindles/balusters, newel posts at the top and bottom of the stairs, a base rail and a handrail.
How do I paint a staircase?
Prepare the staircase area by cleaning away any dust and debris and protecting the area with sheets and tape. Lightly sand the staircase to remove old, flaky paint, then choose a suitable primer and a new paint that is suitable for stairs or floors. Start from one end of the suitcase, applying two to three coats and allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
How do I measure a staircase?
To measure the width of the staircase, measure from one side of the tread to the other (or from the wall to the handrail). You can also measure the stair treads from front edge to back, and the stair risers from the top of one tread to the next one.
How do I panel a staircase?
If you want to create wall panelling up the side of a staircase, you’ll need to measure and mark out your desired pattern on the wall, sand the wall if you need to, cut out and attach the mouldings to create the panelling, then caulk, prime and paint (if needed).
