Fibreboard
More information about Fibreboard
What is fibreboard?
Fibreboard is an engineered wood sheet created from recycled wood fibres, including sawdust, wood chips, softwood flakes, plant fibres, cardboard and paper. These wood fibres are pressed together under high pressure and heat along with a binder such as synthetic resin or adhesive to create firm, uniform boards that can be used in a wide variety of construction or DIY applications.
A fibre board sheet is ideal for many tasks such as furniture making and cabinetry, or as sheathing for walls or backing for roof shingles. It is a highly cost-effective and eco-friendly material for basic jobs, however it does not offer the structural strength and durability that plywood or solid wood would.
What fibreboard sheets do we have available?
If you’re looking for a noticeboard or pinboard for a wall, our Sundeala ‘K’ Pinboard 2440 x 1220 x 9mm holds pins firmly in place. Sundeala board has a soft, suede-like appearance meaning it can be used without a fabric covering.

FAQs
Can I paint fibreboard?
Yes, you can paint fibreboard if you properly sand and prime the surface before applying a suitable paint.
What is fibreboard used for?
Fibreboard is often used in furniture making and cabinetry, sheathing for walls or backing for roof shingles. It can also be used for pinboards and notice boards when paired with a fabric covering.
Is fibreboard waterproof?
No, fibreboard isn’t waterproof. It’s susceptible to swelling and damage if exposed to moisture and wet environments.
Is fibreboard the same as MDF?
No – MDF and fibreboard are not the same thing, but MDF is a type of fibreboard. Fibreboard is an engineered wood product made of several layers of wood fibres glued together. MDF is a type of fibreboard that has a medium density when compared to particle board (low-density) or hardboard (high-density).
Can you tile over hardboard?
Hardboard is not a good material for tiling directly over as it’s prone to shrinking and swelling over time. Instead, use a levelling compound or tile backer board on top to act as a smooth, level surface for the tiles.
