More information about Render

What is render and what is it used for?

Render is a coating that can be applied to the walls of a building to act as an additional layer of protection. Render mix not only protects against weathering from the elements, dampness and erosion, it also prevents cracking and peeling on the wall - it can even help stop the growth of mould or algae. As well as acting as a shield, render can be used to improve the appearance of a building – it is widely available in a range of different colours, whether you want the property to blend into the natural environment or create a statement with a bold colour. Whether you’re after a natural light grey or white render, or brightly coloured render, we’ve got a great selection to browse through at Selco.

There are different types of render available on the market depending on the type of wall material you’re painting on and the finish your customer is looking for, including silicone render, acrylic render, monocouche render, and mineral renders like cement, sand and lime.

Cement render

Cement render is a mixture of cement, sand and water that can be applied in layers to walls made of various materials including brick, concrete and stone. One of the most popular choices of render, cement render is highly durable, weather-resistant and long-lasting and can be finished with various textures and colours. However, cement render can be prone to cracking if it’s not applied correctly or as the building settles.

Silicone render

Silicone render is another type of synthetic render that features silicone resin and other additives, which improves the flexibility, breathability and water-repellence of the render. Silicone render is more elastic and low maintenance when compared to other similar synthetic renders like acrylic render, and it’s highly resistant to staining, fading, UV radiation and weather conditions.

Acrylic render

Acrylic render is a type of synthetic render featuring acrylic resin as well as other additives to improve its performance. It’s a highly durable and versatile type of render which can be applied to various surfaces including brick and concrete. Acrylic render is durable and lightweight, whilst featuring excellent adhesion to various surfaces and resistance to UV and weather.

Lime render

This render is a mixture of sand, water and lime that creates a flexible surface to apply in thin layers. Ideal for old buildings, lime render is highly breathable and allows moisture to escape whilst preventing dampness. It’s also more resistant to decay and cracking than types such as cement render, but it takes longer to harden.

Monocouche render

Originating from a French term meaning ‘single layer,’ monocouche render only requires one coat and is an increasingly popular option on the market. It’s long-lasting and is a self-coloured render, meaning it won’t need painting.
